The guide

How to
find your ghosts

Two ways to find your ghosts: one click with the free Chrome extension, or upload your Instagram export manually. This guide covers the manual method — either way, everything is processed on your device.

Go to instagram.com

Log in, then click the ☰ More option in the bottom left sidebar

Open Accounts Center

Click Settings → then Accounts Center in the left panel

More → Settings → Accounts Center

Navigate to export

Click Your information and permissions → Export your information → Create export → Export to device

Customise information

Click Customise information and select only followers_1.json and following.json

Choose JSON & start

Set Format to JSON → click Start export. When the email arrives, drop the ZIP straight into Ghosted — no extracting needed. Or extract first and upload followers_1.json and following.json separately.

Tap your profile picture → the ☰ menu (top right) → Accounts Center

Create the export

Walk through the export flow, then tap Customise information, pick only followers_1.json and following.json, set Format to JSON, and tap Start export.

Wait for Instagram's email

It usually arrives within a few minutes (sometimes a little longer) with a download link. Tip: set a reminder above so you don't forget to come back and finish.

Some results may be deleted accounts — if a profile says "page not available" when you tap View, that person deleted their account rather than unfollowing you.

Is my data safe?

Yes. Whether you use the Chrome extension or upload files manually, everything is processed locally in your browser. Ghosted never asks for your password and never sends your data to any server.

What does the Chrome extension do?

It reads your follower and following lists directly from your Instagram profile page — the same data you can see by scrolling through them manually. It just automates the process and compares the lists for you. No data export needed.

Will Instagram ban me for this?

No. The Chrome extension reads data that is already visible on your profile page. The manual method uses Instagram’s official data export tool. Ghosted does not log into your account or perform actions on your behalf.

Do you store my Instagram data?

No. Everything is processed locally in your browser. Your follower data is never uploaded or stored on any server.

Do I need an account to use Ghosted?

No account, no signup, no email needed. After payment you get a unique unlock code — your browser remembers it automatically, and you can use the same code to unlock Ghosted on any other device. One-time purchase, no subscription.

What if I lose my unlock code?

No problem. Send a message via the feedback form with the email you used at Stripe checkout — your code will be recovered and sent back to you within 24 hours.

How often should I do this?

Once a month is enough for most people. Request a fresh export, upload it, and compare your results over time.

Why are there deleted accounts in my list?

If someone deleted or deactivated their account, Instagram can temporarily leave them in your following data while removing them from your followers. That can look similar to an unfollower.
